On February 11, 2021, Akwo Kelvin, the Executive Coordinator of the Youth & Gender Initiative (YOGI), was honored with a prestigious award by the Governor of the Northwest Region of Cameroon. This accolade, presented on Cameroon’s National Youth Day, recognized Kelvin’s outstanding contributions to Youth and Peace Activism.
A Catalyst for Change
Kelvin’s journey as a youth leader began with his active involvement in the Cameroon National Youth Council (CNYC), Christian Youth Leadership within the Presbyterian Church in Cameroon (PCC), and other local community groups. His initiatives focus on empowering young people, addressing their unique challenges, environmental care and promoting gender equality within the community.
The Foundation of YOGI
The experiences and insights gained from his work in these organizations laid the groundwork for the establishment of the Youth & Gender Initiative (YOGI) in 2022. YOGI is dedicated to empowering youth, especially young girls, by fostering a culture of peace, education, environmental conservation and collaboration.
Impact on the Community
YOGI’s activities have reached over 2,700 community members, both male and female, and have led to the planting of more than 550 trees. In addition to his activism, Kelvin is also a professional teacher, allowing him to further mold young minds. His educational background enhances his ability to inspire and mentor the next generation, instilling values of leadership and responsibility in his students.
Kelvin’s commitment to creating safe spaces for dialogue and understanding has made a significant impact, encouraging youth to take an active role in shaping their futures. His efforts extend beyond mere recognition; they inspire a generation of young leaders to engage in positive activism.
Looking Ahead
As YOGI continues to grow, Kelvin’s vision remains clear: to empower young people to be agents of change in their communities. The award he received is not just a personal achievement; it symbolizes the collective potential of youth to drive progress and promote peace.
Conclusion
Akwo Kelvin’s journey is a powerful illustration of the impact that youth leadership can have in fostering peace and activism.
