History, Creation, Mission and Values

The Youth and Gender Initiative (YOGI) was born from the collective vision of community youths and women led by Akwo Kelvin. Starting in 2020, these like-minded individuals operated informally as changemakers, each striving to make a difference in communities with limited resources and growth opportunities across Cameroon.

Coming from diverse walks of life but sharing similar experiences of growing up in underprivileged areas, they realized that their impact could be significantly amplified by uniting their efforts. This led to the understanding that a consolidated and formal organization would be more viable for impactful community engagement.

Acting on this realization, the founding members held their first constituent meeting on May 2, 2022. During this meeting, they drafted the association’s articles, laying the groundwork for the organization’s structure and objectives. Their dedication culminated in YOGI’s official registration with the authorities on November 23, 2022, in conformity with Article 7 of Law No. 90/053 of December 19, 1990, which governs associations and organizations in Cameroon.

From its inception, YOGI has been a not-for-profit and non-political organization that stands firm against discrimination based on race, gender orientation, or religion. By formalizing their commitment, the founders established a robust platform dedicated to empowering deprived youths and women through education, socioeconomic activities, environmental preservation, civic responsibility, and healthcare support.

Our journey from individual changemakers to a united organization reflects our belief that together, we can create more profound and lasting impacts in our communities.
